New Research into Gum Disease

// November 4th, 2011

Interesting news from Queen Mary, University of London has stated that bacteria living in the mouth provides the catalyst for the development of gum disease.

This news could pave the way for development of preventive measures in tackling periodontal disease by manipulating the normal bacteria in the same way that probiotic yoghurt works to protect the intestine.

Professor Curtis,  director of the Blizard Institute and co-author on the research paper said “although the findings were encouraging in terms of understanding the way gum disease develops, there was still ‘some way to go’ before there was a similar product on the market for gum disease as a probiotic yoghurt is available for the intestine.”

Flame Health will be keeping upto date on this research.

August Job Statistics

// October 12th, 2011

The Office of National Statistics has stated that the number of people out of work has gone up by 114,000 to 2.57 million in the three month period up to August.

Commenting on the latest figures, Tom Hadley, the REC’s Director of Policy and Professional Services, said:

“This increase is one of the most substantial in recent years and shows a worrying return to the levels of unemployment we saw at the height of the recession. Despite this, we are continuing to see significant demand for staff in a number of sectors.”

DIY Tooth Whitening? Go See Your Dentist First.

// September 23rd, 2011

Flame Health are happy to hear that the British Dental Association has welcomed an agreement to amend the regulations governing the availability and use of tooth whitening products.

New regulations now mean that products containing or releasing over 0.1% hydrogen peroxide cannot be sold directly to the consultant. Products that are over this percentage but under 6% will only be available following a trip to the dentist and a treatment provided/supervised by them. This is to ensure that patients are able to use products provided to them properly at home.

The BDA and its partners in the Council of European Dentists (CED) have fought for a decision on this issue for almost four years.

As a dentist, how do you feel about these new regulations? Please let Flame Health know your thoughts.

Could cognitive therapy overcome dental anxieties?

// September 2nd, 2011

The British Dental Journal has suggested from research that dental anxieties could be overcome with a single session of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

The authors of the study, based on an initial pilot of 60 patients who relied on having intravenous sedation before they could undergo dental treatment, concluded that the benefits were of such significance that they advise dental providers to implement this approach now rather than wait to pursue further research.

The initial cohort of 60 patients had all attended a specialist dental clinic in Sheffield for people with severe dental phobia. Half the group were offered CBT, with 21 patients accepting the treatment. Twenty of these went on to have dental treatment without having to be sedated. An audit of these patients a decade later found that of the 19 patients located who had had CBT, none had returned to sedation in the intervening 10-year period.

The latest 10-yearly survey on adult dental health published earlier this year by the NHS Information Centre suggests that as many as 12% of people may experience extreme dental anxiety.

Flame Health thinks that the results of this study are very impressive. We would like to hear from Dentists who want to use cognitive behavioural therapy in their practices. Get in contact today and let Flame Health know your thoughts.

Can Lollipops fight tooth decay?

// August 17th, 2011

A US study conducted in Michigan among children ages 2-5, has revealed that a liquorice lollipop can reduce the bacteria associated with tooth decay.

In the study, 66 pre-school students were given a lollipop that contained liquorice root extract for 10 minutes twice daily for three weeks.

The researchers used a saliva test to measure the level of S. mutans in each child’s mouth before and during the three-week study, as well as for several weeks after the children stopped getting the lollipops.

The investigators found a significant reduction in S. mutans during the study, and the reduction lasted for an additional 22 days before the organisms began to rebound.

Liquorice root extract (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) is believed to kill S. mutans, which is just one of an estimated 700 types of bacteria found in the human mouth. Although most of the bacteria are harmless, S. mutans survives in plaque and releases acid that causes tooth decay.

Jacqueline Tallman, RDH, BS, MPA, the study’s principal investigator, said that the findings of the study involving the use of the liquorice lollipops in the 66 pre-school children are ‘important not only for dental caries prevention research but also demonstrates the feasibility of a classroom protocol using a unique delivery system suitable for young children’.
