Shocking results from Simply Health’s Annual Dental Survey

Flame Health Dentistry are shocked to hear that from out of a survey of 11,785 British adults, 70% say they are unaware of any of the symptoms of mouth cancer.

The report from Simply Health’s Annual Dental Survey highlights the need to educate the population.

Flame Health Dentistry agree with this as the number of people who are unaware of the symptoms is shocking.

The most common symptoms include:

A mouth sore or ulcer that fails to heal or bleeds easily
All red or red and white patches in the mouth that will not go away
A lump or thickening in the mouth, tongue or throat
Difficulty in chewing or swallowing food
New persistent pain

It has been a great week for Flame Health Dentistry. The team have been very busy after the May bank holiday and are looking forward to the weekend!

This week Divisional Partner, David Holden and Junior Partner Natalia secured a placement that they had been working on for a while. It is great to see this finalised and we hope the candidate enjoys their new role!

New Research into Gum Disease

Interesting news from Queen Mary, University of London has stated that bacteria living in the mouth provides the catalyst for the development of gum disease.

This news could pave the way for development of preventive measures in tackling periodontal disease by manipulating the normal bacteria in the same way that probiotic yoghurt works to protect the intestine.

Professor Curtis, director of the Blizard Institute and co-author on the research paper said “although the findings were encouraging in terms of understanding the way gum disease develops, there was still ‘some way to go’ before there was a similar product on the market for gum disease as a probiotic yoghurt is available for the intestine.”

August Job Statistics

The Office of National Statistics has stated that the number of people out of work has gone up by 114,000 to 2.57 million in the three month period up to August.

Commenting on the latest figures, Tom Hadley, the REC’s Director of Policy and Professional Services, said:

“This increase is one of the most substantial in recent years and shows a worrying return to the levels of unemployment we saw at the height of the recession. Despite this, we are continuing to see significant demand for staff in a number of sectors.”

Flame Health are saddened to hear this news, especially as it is the highest increase in recent years.
