The Role of Community Pharmacies

// May 14th, 2012

Flame Health Pharmacy were keen to hear the thoughts from The Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union this week.

They have stated that ‘’community pharmacy needs to be recognised as a unique asset that contributes significantly to the effectiveness and efficiency of health systems. It urges that, in the current times of economic crisis when all health budgets are under pressure, any measures that impact on the sustainability of pharmacies “should be carefully considered, taking into account the services pharmacies provide and the costs they help to save”.’

Flame Health Pharmacy work alongside several community pharmacies across the UK, recruiting Pharmacists and Pharmacy Managers and the team are pleased to hear the above comments.

Should we be reminded to take our prescription by a text message?

// May 14th, 2012

As a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Manager, do you think the use of a text messaging service to increase medicine adherence is a good thing?

A review of evidence published by the Institute for Health Services Research has concluded that it does, at least in the short term.

Clare Brazill, Divisional Partner at Flame Health Pharmacy comments,

“If a smart phone can remind you to take your medicine on a daily basis, then thumbs up. However the issue arises that should a patient already understand when and why to take certain medicines? There is also the issue of practicality. I am sure there are some people who are less confident in using mobile phones. But this is not a replacement service and patients can still visit their local pharmacy for help and support. However, in the world we live in today it is good to see technological advances in the way we manage our prescriptions.”

Will the Olympics bring worry to London Pharmacies?

// May 10th, 2012

As the Olympics draw closer Pharmacies in East London are hearing rumbles that their stores may have to keep a pharmacist in the practice throughout the night to accept medicine deliveries due to road disruptions affecting deliveries.

The British Association of Pharmaceutical Wholesalers (BAPW) has warned that a revised medicines delivery service could see pharmacies receiving deliveries between midnight and 6am.

As a pharmacist, what are your thoughts on this?

Clare Brazill, Divisional Partner at Flame Health Pharmacy has stressed that “The pharmacist who has been working throughout the day cannot be expected to stay throughout the night as well. I hope plans are set in place to overcome such issues.”

Great news for Pharmacists!

// May 10th, 2012

It is great to hear that this year Pharmacists will be able to choose the brand and volume of flu vaccines.

The NPA have launched the 2012/2013 programme and will give pharmacists hands-on experience in administering injections, performing resuscitation and dealing with anaphylaxis.

Clare Brazill, Divisional Partner at Flame Health Pharmacy comments,

“It is great to hear that Pharmacists have been given this choice to choose the brand they see fit. This news gives Pharmacists and Pharmacy Managers a voice within their pharmacy, which is fantastic!”

Is there a pharmacy stock shortage on the horizon?

// May 10th, 2012

Flame Health Pharmacy are shocked to hear the latest news that some exporting pharmacies are ordering high percentages of stock. So high that wholesalers’ stocks are being used up and other pharmacies are being left short.

The question is, why are pharmacies ordering so much stock? Would this impact upon patients? Could this be managed somehow? An anonymous analyst at a manufacturer says this is an impossible task to manage.

What are your thoughts?

The C+D Stocks Survey 2011, showed that several pharmacists said they thought people with export licenses should be closely monitored; but in a web poll, almost two-thirds thought pharmacists should be allowed to export.

Please let Flame Health Pharmacy know your thoughts on this issue.

Are MURs wasteful?

// April 24th, 2012

As a pharmacist, do you think that MURs are a wasteful subsidy?

The TaxPayers’ Alliance has commented this week stating that the service is a £67 million “wasteful subsidy to Pharmacists”. However the Department of Health has strongly defended MURs, claiming that the TaxPayers’ Alliance report was based on limited research.

Clare Brazill, Divisional Partner at Flame Health Pharmacy comments,

“It is sad to hear that the Tax Payers’ Alliance has come to this conclusion on possible limited research. MURs are valuable to the industry. They are about helping patients to take their medicine as intended, taking pressure off of GPs. Over recent years, Pharmacies are becoming more popular in helping the public over their GPs and we see this as a good thing. If the amount paid for MURs decreases then we believe that hospital and GP pressures will increase, which is something we do not need.”
