It was further disappointment in the jobs market this week as UK unemployment for the past quarter increased by 48,000.

Figures now show that unemployment now stands at a shocking 2.67 million. The highest since November 1995.

Worryingly youth unemployment increased by 22,000 to 1.04 million.

The World Council of Optometry (WCO) has launched a search for its International Optometrist of the Year.

If you have made an outstanding contribution to the development of optometry worldwide the you could be in line for this accolade! 

WCO president, Tone Garaas-Maurdalen, said:

“This award is a fantastic way for the global optometric community to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our friends and colleagues. There are many optometrists around the world who make an outstanding contribution to the profession, and I urge our members to recognise their commitment by nominating them for this award.”

Nominations can be submitted online at www.worldoptometry.org/IOY by February 24 and the winner will be announced during the WCO conference in Chicago, USA in June.

Organisers are aiming to increase figures by 15%. This is great news to Flame Health Optometry. Last year was a great turn out but with more people attending, the Optometry team will be poised to answer any questions you have.

The team will be there from April 13th-15th. Closer to the time we will be letting you know what stand we will be on and what we will be doing over the 3 days.

The petition came about due to the results of a recent survey carried out by Brake and Ultralase. The results showed that out of 2,000 people, one in three drivers requiring vision correction makes two or more journeys a week without wearing their glasses or contact lenses.

If at least 100,000 people sign the petition it will be debated in the House of Commons.

Flame Health will be following this and will keep you up to date.

This would mean that pharmacists’ fees will be set at £240 and pharmacy technician fees will be £108. In the light of the current economic climate, this is great news!

Funding will be given to PCT’s who have already bid for the money. The money will then be spent on expanding local services to meet patients’ needs.

Andrew Lansley, said:

“Too many people still have problems getting to see an NHS dentist. Giving people back their NHS dentist is a key priority of mine so I am delighted that we have been able to find more money for dentistry because of our successful programme of efficiency savings in the NHS.”

The Report on Jobs also follows better than expected services data from the Purchasing Managers’ Index last Friday, which suggests that confidence is growing amongst consumers as well as businesses.”
