The Role of Community Pharmacies

// May 14th, 2012

Flame Health Pharmacy were keen to hear the thoughts from The Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union this week.

They have stated that ‘’community pharmacy needs to be recognised as a unique asset that contributes significantly to the effectiveness and efficiency of health systems. It urges that, in the current times of economic crisis when all health budgets are under pressure, any measures that impact on the sustainability of pharmacies “should be carefully considered, taking into account the services pharmacies provide and the costs they help to save”.’

Stop Smoking Rates – Lowest Figures From Pharmacies

// February 1st, 2011

According to the latest NHS stop smoking figures, pharmacies continue to have the lowest stop smoking rates among NHS providers in England.

From April to September 2010 there was a 44% successful quit rate among pharmacy patients. Quit rates were higher among other providers such as hospitals wards and prisons, with military bases coming out on top at 58%.

However the overall number of successful quitters using pharmacies increased to 4,200 a month between April and September. This report also showed that pharmacies helped over 25,000 people to quit in the 6 months leading to September 2010.

As a pharmacist, how do you feel about these figures? Do you feel that as a pharmacy you are reaching out to a harder to reach patient based compared to such providers as hospital wards and prison cells? Do you feel that this then could make a difference to the overall figure for pharmacies?

Please let Flame Health know your thoughts.

Welsh Community Health Services to be Protected

// November 23rd, 2010

The Welsh Assembly Government has promised that funding for community health services in Wales will be protected in cash terms in 2011-2012, with free prescriptions maintained.

Although the Assembly would be losing around £860 million of funding from the UK government, the settlement for health would be fair. 40% of the budget will continue to be investing in health and social services.

White Paper Vision – Pharmacists Paid for Performance

// July 20th, 2010

The Government has announced in its white paper that a new community pharmacy contract will see pharmacists paid for performance. The community pharmacy contract, through this payment for performance will incentivise and support high quality and efficient services.

The paper also outlines a radical change to the structure of the NHS with local commissioning being led by groups of GP’s. However, pharmacy services would be outside the GP remit, instead being commissioned by a statutory NHS commissioning board.

Flame Health would like to know your views on this, particularly if you are in the pharmacy industry.
