Shocking results from Simply Health’s Annual Dental Survey

// May 15th, 2012

Flame Health Dentistry are shocked to hear that from out of a survey of 11,785 British adults, 70% say they are unaware of any of the symptoms of mouth cancer.

The report from Simply Health’s Annual Dental Survey highlights the need to educate the population.

Flame Health Dentistry
agree with this as the number of people who are unaware of the symptoms is shocking.

The most common symptoms include:

  • A mouth sore or ulcer that fails to heal or bleeds easily
  • All red or red and white patches in the mouth that will not go away
  • A lump or thickening in the mouth, tongue or throat
  • Difficulty in chewing or swallowing food
  • New persistent pain

Bridge2Aid – Improving Global Oral Health

// May 15th, 2012

Flame Health Dentistry are happy to hear that a dental charity is launching a campaign to help improve global oral health.

Bridge2Aid is asking practices to offer their patients a chance to add £1 to their bill under its  Small Change = Big Change scheme.

From these donations, every £120 raised, means that a whole village within East Africa will gain access to emergency dental care.

David Holden, Divisional Partner at Flame Health Dentistry comments,

“This is a great campaign. I am sure a lot of people within the UK do not know about dental struggles in countries such as Africa. I hope that dental practices take on this campaign and that the charity gains exposure and a fantastic amount of donation from the patients.”

Do you floss?

// April 20th, 2012

A new survey conducted by the Adult Dental Health Survey has shown that a large proportion of people in the UK have poor oral hygiene.

Disappointingly just 31% use mouth wash and only 22% floss. These dental routines need to be completed daily to reduce tooth decay and gum disease. Bad oral health leads to more trips to the dentist but if patients do not go and it is left untreated then serious consequences for the body’s overall health.

These statistics are slightly worrying. Flame Health Dentistry say, look after your teeth and have regular dental check ups!

Are you being priced out of choosing Dentistry as a career?

// April 19th, 2012

It is worrying to hear that students from socio-economic backgrounds are being priced out of choosing dentistry as a career. Just one in six applications for dentistry last year were from students from a lower socio economic background.

This could be mainly down to debt. Dental students on average are graduating with £25,545 of debt compared to the average student with debt of £16,614. This will by no doubt increase further due to universities charging up to £9,000 a year for tuition fees. This could mean a dental student could owe a whopping £63,000!

Martin Nimmo, the chair of the BDA’s Young Dentists and Student Committees, said the BDA had warned government taking on sizeable debts could deter potential students.

He added: “The BDA believes that dentistry should attract the brightest and best candidates, regardless of their social background.”

So what does the future hold for courses such as dentistry? David Holden, Divisional Partner at Flame Health Dentistry comments,

“With university fees rising year on year it is understandable that people from certain backgrounds would be hindered from applying. With the high percentages of the youth of today being unemployed, fees like this do not help those who do want to better their careers. I am interested to see how the government could possibly tackle these issues in the future”.

// February 9th, 2012

Flame Health Dentistry are please to read that Health Secretary Andrew Lansley will release £28 million of funding so that the number of people able to visit the dentist increases.

Funding will be given to PCT’s who have already bid for the money. The money will then be spent on expanding local services to meet patients’ needs.

Andrew Lansley, said:

“Too many people still have problems getting to see an NHS dentist. Giving people back their NHS dentist is a key priority of mine so I am delighted that we have been able to find more money for dentistry because of our successful programme of efficiency savings in the NHS.”
