Should a Dentist screen a patient for signs of excessive drinking?

// April 4th, 2012

Researchers at The Royal College of Surgeons Dental Journal have suggested that Dentists should screen patients for signs of excessive drinking.

Extreme alcohol consumption can lead to cancer of the mouth, larynx and oesophagus and sometimes dentists are the first to identify mouth problems.

As a dentist, do you think screening patients for such issues is a good idea? Do you do this already? Researchers have suggested that questionnaires could be handed out at the start of consultations to identify those with high drinking levels. What are your thoughts on this? Please let Flame Health know.

A Pain Free Alternative to Dental Fillings?

// January 25th, 2012

Good news for dental patients who are a bit wary of going to see a dentist because of the pain factor.

The University of Missouri and Nanova have created a pain free alternative to dental fillings and it could come to market very soon. The Plasma Brush is soon to undergo clinical trials, which will use chemical reactions to disinfect and clean out cavities within 30 seconds. The team are hoping to reduce the number and costs of replacement fillings and take away some of the pain, although dentists may still need to use a drill to assist in the filling process.

If the clinical trials go well and it is approved by the FDA, the Plasma Brush could come to market by 2013.

Flame Health are keen to hear the thoughts of dentists. If this brush was approved by the FDA, would you like to have it in your practice? Do you think it will work with regards to pain relief. Please let Flame Health know your thoughts.

Halted Paths For Overseas Dentists

// March 29th, 2011

Dentists from abroad have been caught up in bureaucratic red tape, halting their path to practicing in the UK.

Candidates who completed the first part of the Licentiate in Dental Surgery (LDS) held by the Royal College of Surgeons of England are not being able to complete the second part due to a row between them and the GDC. With the GDC saying it had ‘some serious issues’ with the revised LDS award, having inspected the first sitting.

A GDC spokesperson said ‘While the GDC’s independent inspectors’ views on the LDS are no reflection on its confidence in the Royal College of Surgeons of England as an institution, the GDC has been working with the college to bring the LDS up to the required standard.

Current and prospective LDS candidates are requested to contact the college for the latest information.

Undecided CQC Fees

// March 11th, 2011

The British Dental Association has called for clarity on CQC fees.

In a letter to the CQC, the BDA has said that it is unacceptable that dentists still do not know what fees are to be charged, even though the deadline for registration is just three weeks away.  The letter also highlights that fact that many dentists must again begin their efforts to secure a Criminal Records Bureau check, after being told that primary care trusts have not supplied to CQC the required verification.

Chair of the BDA executive board said, ‘it is staggering that dentists are still in the dark about CQC fees so close to the deadline. We call on CQC to make an announcement on this issue immediately so that practices have the information they need to plan effectively for the new financial year.’

GDC Postpones Vote on Dr Title

// March 3rd, 2011

A decision by the GDC to postpone a vote on whether dentists should be able to continue using their ‘Dr’ title so that an impact assessment can be carried out allows proper consideration of the issue, the BDA has said.

The decision to take the recommendation back so that the impact of the issue can be properly considered follows a warning from the BDA that a change to the rules would create confusion, be perceived as a downgrading of dentistry and could disadvantage UK trained dentists. Implementing a change could also mean resources being wasted.

Flame Health will be following this issue, keeping you up to date on the outcome.
