Do you advertise your dental practice in the correct way?

// February 2nd, 2012

From 1st March, dentists who advertise their services will be given guidance by the GDC so that information is clear and not misleading to the public.

A website now needs to show details of their complaint procedure as well as contact information if a patient is not satisfied with the response. The guidance also makes clear that every dental professional has a responsibility to ensure that any promotional information containing their name, in print or online, is current and accurate. GDC registration also needs to be shown.

As a dentist how do you feel about this new guidance? Do you think by complying to this, a patients’ interests are being put first? Do you advertise in this way already? Please let Flame Health know your thoughts.

GDC Registration Fees Fixed for 2012

// September 30th, 2011

Flame Health are happy to hear that there will be no increase in registration fees for dentists and dental care professionals in 2012.

The decision by the GDC is in line with both the GDC’s own strategy and the Government’s command paper. This means that dentists will pay £576 b 31st December 2011 and dental care professionals £120 by 31st July 2012.

While the economy is still unsettled, it is great to hear that the GDC is price freezing registration fees for next year!

Halted Paths For Overseas Dentists

// March 29th, 2011

Dentists from abroad have been caught up in bureaucratic red tape, halting their path to practicing in the UK.

Candidates who completed the first part of the Licentiate in Dental Surgery (LDS) held by the Royal College of Surgeons of England are not being able to complete the second part due to a row between them and the GDC. With the GDC saying it had ‘some serious issues’ with the revised LDS award, having inspected the first sitting.

A GDC spokesperson said ‘While the GDC’s independent inspectors’ views on the LDS are no reflection on its confidence in the Royal College of Surgeons of England as an institution, the GDC has been working with the college to bring the LDS up to the required standard.

Current and prospective LDS candidates are requested to contact the college for the latest information.

GDC Postpones Vote on Dr Title

// March 3rd, 2011

A decision by the GDC to postpone a vote on whether dentists should be able to continue using their ‘Dr’ title so that an impact assessment can be carried out allows proper consideration of the issue, the BDA has said.

The decision to take the recommendation back so that the impact of the issue can be properly considered follows a warning from the BDA that a change to the rules would create confusion, be perceived as a downgrading of dentistry and could disadvantage UK trained dentists. Implementing a change could also mean resources being wasted.

Flame Health will be following this issue, keeping you up to date on the outcome.

GDC Redesign

// December 6th, 2010

The General Dental Council (GDC) has begun a review of its Standards Guidance and Scope of Practice.

The aim of the review is to go back to square one. This will take place in 2011 and will include consultations, focus groups, a working group and GDC staff attending events across the UK, to hear directly from those affected.

The GDC will be asking registrants, patients and other stakeholders what level of detail they would find helpful, what they think of the current standards and what does and doesn’t work.

The GDC is hoping to produce the new guidance in early 2012.

End Of Cycle CPD is Looming for Dentists

// November 26th, 2010

The General Dental Council (GDC) is calling on dentists to submit their annual or end of cycle continuing professional development (CPD) declarations by 28th January 2011.

To remain registered to practice dentists must complete 250 hours every five years, of which 75 must be verifiable. Records need to be kept for five years after the end of their cycle, as these maybe needed for audit purposes.

Dentists who do not meet the deadline will be contacted and asked to send their full CPD records to verify that they have met the GDC’s requirements. If a dentist does not comply with this request, they will face being removed from the register and lose the right to practice in the UK.

Social Media – Candidate Concerns over Confidentiality and Unwanted Exposure in Senior Level / Executive Recruitment

// September 3rd, 2010

As an organisation we feel it is important to embrace social media and it most definitely plays a key part in our recruitment strategy in terms of raising awareness of our business and our current opportunities on sites such as Linkedin, Twitter and Facebook; however, given the profile and seniority of individuals we recruit and represent, we firmly believe that not everyone wants everyone else to know what they are doing when they are exploring potential new career opportunities. So in terms of senior level / executive career moves confidentiality is key!

The level of openness associated with social media, is obviously fine for social purposes, however, we feel that professional people are becoming much more considered and aware of the implications so subsequently take  a different approach when it comes to careers and communicating amongst their professional network. We feel it has a place within certain areas of  the recruitment sector especially where there is more volume attached, however, we are finding that more conventional methods are still prevalent across our business sectors.

Confidential Networking at my flame

Given our proven hybrid approach of a sophisticated and user friendly online platform supported by proven traditional recruitment methods, we feel is one of the main reasons for the increase in registrations and applications across our business, especially on our Premium Members website my flame.
