From 1st July 2011 all pharmacy technicians must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) to practice in England, Scotland or Wales.
If you do not apply to register before 5pm on 30th June 2011 you will not be able to carry out the duties under the title of being a pharmacy technician. You may find you have to undertake further qualifications and work experience before you can join to register.
This new statutory register will improve protection for patients and provide an assurance that you are under a duty to maintain the high standards the GPhC sets. As a member of a regulated profession, you should benefit from greater public confidence and trust in their workplace.
Don’t delay and register before 5pm on 30th June 2011.
Further details about compulsory registration and application forms are available on the GPhC’s website http://www.pharmacyregulation.org/index.aspx

The University of Birmingham and the University of Durham may become the first in the UK to offer an integrated 5 year pharmacy degree, incorporating clinical practice when they are considered by the GPHC in June.
The new five year programme would include two six month placements which would replace the requirement for the current post graduate one year pre registration training.
If the proposals are approved the university of Birmingham said it would take its first intake from October 2013.

The GPHC is seeking views on its proposed fees for 2012, which include a plan to raise pharmacists’ renewal fees to £272.
A consultation on the proposals has now been launched and will run until 12th May.
As a pharmacist, do you feel these renewal fees are acceptable?
The GPHC said the 4% fee rise for pharmacists was below the rate of inflation and added that the body was ‘conscious of the current economic climate’ but said its ‘vital regulatory duties are funded by the registrant’s fees’.
Flame Health are keen to know your thoughts on this.

The GPHC has urged pharmacists to respond to their consultation on CPD, with just a few weeks to go before the closing date (7th February).
The consultation includes the proposal to set a pass mark for CPD standard at 50% and to require one third of CPD entries to start the ‘reflection stage’.
It is being proposed that registrants not submitting a CPD record for review when requested will be removed from the register if they do not respond to a notice, or given the option of a Fitness to Practice hearing.
