News from the College of Optometrists

// October 20th, 2011

Flame Health are happy to hear that the College of Optometrists have plans in place to be more cost effective and supportive.

This has been driven after a low uptake of its current advanced education. Members highlighted that barriers to applications included financial and time constraints, gaining the required experience needed to enter the examination, and a lack of financial reward.

The College has looked at collaboration with universities and other organisations to help its new Higher Qualifications become nationally recognised qualifications for working in enhanced services.

A review, led by College president Dr Cindy Tromans (pictured), has produced a framework within which any qualification proposed by universities and other organisations would have to fit. It also highlighted the required criteria against which the qualifications would be accredited.

Director of education at the College, Jacqueline Martin, said: “We will no longer deliver the qualifications. Instead universities and other organisations will apply to the College for accreditation of modular qualifications that they offer in line with our qualifications framework.”

// April 6th, 2011

Following on from last weeks GOC retention deadline, 203 practitioners have been removed from the optical registers. This number is from those who failed to complete the online registration on time. Those who wish to continue practising must now pay £340 to have their
registration restored.

Samantha Peters, chief executive and registrar had said, “We’re delighted that the online retention system has allowed our registrants to complete their retention so easily. To have such good figures for the first year of operation shows it works well.”

Are you an optical professional who missed out on the deadline? How do you feel about paying the £340 fine? Or are you an optical professional who used the new online system? How did you find it? Please let Flame Health know your thoughts.

Optical Treatments – Can We Prevent Short Sightedness?

// September 14th, 2010

Scientists at King College London have pin pointed one of the genes which is responsible for myopia (short sightedness) after a 12 year study.
Lead author of this study Dr Hysi said “We have known for many years that the most important risk factor for being short sighted is having parents who are short sighted. For the first time we are identifying genes that may be involved in passing on this susceptibility. By identifying biological pathways causing myopia, we hope to be able to develop treatments in the future that will prevent, or stop myopia progressing”
However, development of medicines such as eye drops to treat the condition may not be readily available as some may want. Rigorous testing is still required to explore possible side effects.
Flame Health are keen to see the development of this early study. We will be keeping the Blog updated on this study.  Watch this space.
